Township Initiatives

Lower Merion Township has implemented several initiatives to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable practices within the community. These efforts are part of the township’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship and waste reduction. Key actions and strategies include:

1

Single-Use Plastic Ban

Lower Merion passed a ban on single-use plastic bags, particularly targeting retail establishments. The goal is to reduce reliance on plastic bags, which often end up as litter and contribute to environmental pollution.

This ban encourages residents and businesses to switch to reusable or biodegradable alternatives.

2

Recycling Programs

The township offers comprehensive curbside recycling services, including plastics. Residents are encouraged to recycle plastic containers, bottles, and other approved items.

This ban encourages residents and businesses to switch to reusable or biodegradable alternatives.

3

Plastic Collection Initiatives

With the support of Lower Merion Sustainability, Youth Sustainability Leaders (YSL) has embraced programs such as the NexTrex Plastic Bench Program, which incentivizes the collection of specific types of plastic to be recycled and turned into useful products, like benches for community spaces.

Through both Lower Merion and Youth Sustainability Leaders, schools, businesses, and community organizations have set up plastic collection bins to gather plastic bags, films, and wraps, diverting these materials from landfills.

4

Public Education and Outreach

Youth Sustainability Leaders seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic waste and the importance of reducing single-use plastics.

Educational campaigns include workshops, social media outreach, and community events aimed at teaching residents about sustainable alternatives and proper waste management practices.

5

Collaboration with Environmental Organizations

Lower Merion and Youth Sustainability Leaders collaborate with organizations like the Riverbend Environmental Education Center, which helps foster environmental literacy and conservation efforts, including waste reduction initiatives.

These collaborations provide residents with opportunities to participate in sustainability projects that contribute to reducing plastic waste in the community.

6

Sustainability Goals

The township has set long-term sustainability goals to reduce overall waste and increase recycling rates, as part of a larger environmental plan. Lower Merion’s sustainability goals align with state and national efforts to minimize plastic pollution.
